GameCube codes with GeckoOS

Guide created by Cubed Cinder; thanks go out to WiiPower, Link, and many others for their help

Ios236 v6 installer zip

You'll need a working Wi-Fi connection to complete these steps and at least version 1.0.7 of the Homebrew Channel installed. Obviously this will only work on Wii models that support backwards compatibility with GameCube games.

I strongly recommend using the version 2 method over this one. This method is outdated and only included for archival purposes, and no more e-mails regarding this method will be answered.

IOS236 Installer v6
Homebrew MIOS Patcher 0.2
GeckoOS Mod 0.91 (to be used ONLY with GameCube games; for Wii games, I recommend using the latest and greatest official release of GeckoOS)

IMPORTANT: Make sure there is nothing inserted in the GameCube memory card slots of your console. Weird things tend to happen when GameCube memory cards or anything else is plugged in. You can plug back in memory cards when you are done with installation.

Step 1: IOS236 Installer
After unzipping the downloads above to your SD card, start up Homebrew Channel and run IOS236 Installer. Press the 1 button on your Wii Remote to begin the installer. When it asks, hold the Wii Remote vertically and tap left or right on the D-Pad until 'Download IOS from NUS' is selected. Press A, and if all goes well, a modified IOS36 will be prepared automatically. Press A one more time when it asks, and IOS236 will be installed. Press any button to return to the Homebrew Channel.

Step 2: Homebrew MIOS Patcher
The MIOS is a special IOS inside the Wii. It is one of the core components that allow the Wii to play GameCube games. This app will patch up the MIOS to allow GeckoOS mod to function properly with GameCube games. The installer is built similarly to the IOS236 Installer (and old Trucha Bug Restorer), so if you made it past that step, you'll have no problem here.

Start the Homebrew MIOS Patcher from the HBC. Using the D-Pad while holding the Wii Remote vertically, choose IOS236 (the one you just made) as the IOS to load. After pressing A, wait for 'Press 1 or Start to start the application...' to pop up below all the warning text. The app will quit if you try to rush through this part.

Next, choose MIOS menu. Here, you'll see three options:

Install patched MIOSv4
Patch for homebrew: yes
Set revision to 65535: no

Only one change needs to be made, and that's setting revision to 65535 from NO to YES. Once this is done, go up to Install patched MIOSv4 and hit A. Next, hit right on the D-Pad to choose Download MIOS from NUS. Let the process play out (it should go by very quickly), and then hit A for confirmation. If all goes well, it will say MIOS installed. Hit any button to exit.

Step 3: Configuring GeckoOS Mod
Okey dokey, you're almost there! Before launching GeckoOS Mod, make sure you've already set up the GCT files for the GameCube game of your choice. For more info on how to do this, see here under 'How to install codes.'

Now start up GeckoOS Mod from HBC. When you get to the vanilla black-looking main menu, go down and select Options. Now choose General Options. The only option you want to change here is Save Config from NO to YES. Now choose 'Return to Menu.'

Go down to Ocarina/Wiird next (you don't need to change anything under Wii Options or GC Options). Change GC Hook Type from None to VI, and change GC Ocarina from NO to YES. Leave everything else alone and go down to Return to Menu.

That's it! Just choose Launch Game (after inserting the GameCube disc of your choice), and if all went according to plan, you'll be using cheats in your GameCube games!
