Full credit goes to ReKleSS who did this exactly 10 years ago - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17808 That thread is old, in the shmups section and has a title that doesn't do the subject justice so I thought it would be good to get a new one happening in case some new members want to try it out. A detailed tutorial with pics is in the second post of this thread. Short tutorial: Open a PS2 iso in a hex editor(something like HxD for example). Change: 01 00 24 32 ff 00 45 32 to 00 00 04 20 ff 00 45 32 and 01 00 24 32 04 00 06 a6 to 00 00 04 20 04 00 06 a6 Save, patch ESR if needed and burn. Joined: 03 Jul 2014 Posts: 553 Location: Australia | Tutorial with pics. Download HxD - https://mh-nexus.de/en/hxd/ Get a PS2 iso from somewhere. Open your iso in HxD, click search in the top bar and then find(or press CTRL F) to bring up the find menu. Copy 01 00 24 32 ff 00 45 32 into the search field. Make sure you change Datatype to 'Hex-Values' and Search Direction to 'All'. It should look exactly like this: When it has found the values it will highlight it, don't click or type anything. With the values highlighted, press CTRL V to paste 00 00 04 20 ff 00 45 32 After pasting it will be red, this is normal. If successful it should look like this: You need to repeat this process again with different values so bring up the find menu again and copy 01 00 24 32 04 00 06 a6 into the search field. Again make sure you have Hex-Values and All selected. It will highlight the value just like the first time. Paste 00 00 04 20 04 00 06 a6 over the highlight. Now you're done. Click file and save as to save your iso. Now you can burn/patch with ESR as usual. Time to play Shiki 2 in 240P.

You could also add a blank 1GB file (one is conveniently found in Mushi iirc) at the root to push the data further and give the optical block some relief. _________________

But on topic: 240p is also possible via GSM by choosing the 'non-interlaced' NTSC mode. Hex editing the ISO should be a more permanent solution of course.

I ripped my entire PS2 collection to a hdd and play everything that way now. It's a little bit of a hassle to get games on there again so GSM seems to be the option for me instead.

That is just great to run games in 480p, Sorry for the hijack as this thread is for 240p. I do wonder if there is a OPL+GSM combo that deinterlaces into 240p though. hm.... _________________

Can't help you there, I copied all my games to hard drive and play them with OPL. You might as well get in the habit of doing that since you disc drive won't last forever.

Joined: 06 Aug 2018 Posts: 25 | Edited: 2020-05-23 21:00 with Maximo and photos Hi Everyone I've worked my way through hex editing my collection and found some positive results! The following titles are working well with the hex edit: Rez Tekken 4 [holding key combo to change to 480p still working!] Tekken 5 [in-game settings change to 480p still working!] Soul Calibur 2 Soul Calibur 3 [holding key combo to change to 480p still working!] Time Crisis: Crisis Zone [big improvement] And these two Capcom beauties are essential viewing when patched to 240p. I put about 2 hours into working out that the game runs in 480i but has the main game as a lower resolution with the on screen hud at true 480i. This created scaling problems as the game would get blurry when you spun around or moved. Patching to 240p gives crystal clear motion and no combing artefacts, albeit with lower resolution hud. The patched ISOs will default to 240p on boot but can be restored easily to 480i with GSM set to 'NTSC'. Despite the large playability improvements from 240p, some in game videos cause Army of Zin to crash. I managed this by regularily saving my game and restarting in NTSC mode to watch the movie (only 2 I think) then going back to 240p later. Maximo vs Army of Zin Maximo - Ghosts to Glory
NTSC sources, HxD for windows, OPL to load games from internal HDD. Photos showing Maximo vs Army of Zin running on a Sony PVM-14L5 in hex-edited 240p mode: https://imgur.com/a/dDNs2KF I'd also like to report on simply doing the 240p patching in OPL via PNACH codes converted to PS2RD. This idea follows on the work for the PS2 emulator that enables progressive scan with PNACH codes, so one can avoid de-interlacing on a PC. Unfortunately this is incompatible with real hardware. Trust me I have tried it for various titles and it's hilarious. Layers blend into one another, graphics glitch or black frame insertion occurs (!). Stick to hex editing for real hardware. Working: Capcom Classic Collection (USA) Capcom Classic Collection 2 (USA) Garou Mark of the Wolves (JPN) Gradius V (USA) (Skip intro or it will crash) Metal Slug 3 (NTSC-J) Metal Slug 4 (US) Metal Slug 5 (US) Metal Slug Complete (JPN) Not Working: Gradius III & IV (NTSC-U) Gradius V (JPN) Samurai Spirits Rokuban Shobu (JPN) Street Fighter III Third Strike (JPN) Street Fighter Zero Fighter's Generations (JPN) Vampire: Darstalker's Collection (JPN) World Heroes Gorgeous (JPN) Wish I was technically inclined to do these patches. I have Japanese version of World Heroes Gorgeous and noticed it isn't included in lists of PS2 games that natively run in 240p (although it looks like it) while NTSC-U/C and EU versions are on that same list. Can anyone confirm this? Sounds very counterintuitive. The upscaled and filtered graphics in Samurai Spirits Rokuban Shobu is hideous. Such a shame on a game that makes use of beautiful hand drawn art. 480i on Street Fighter III Third Strike, Street Fighter Zero Fighter's Generations and Vampire: Darstalker's Collection doesn't look as and so bad, but perhaps may benefit much from this hack. Ditto for the Capcom Collections. I would rate Garou Mark of the Wolves (JPN) and Metal Slug Complete (JPN) graphics quality in between. Why in the world would you want to run Gradius V at 240p? With GSM you can run it at 480p and it looks amazing. Not all displays are capable of 480p. 240p may give that 'old skool' look especially on SDTV. [*]Rez [*]Tekken 4 [holding key combo to change to 480p still working!] [*]Tekken 5 [in-game settings change to 480p still working!] [*]Soul Calibur 2 [*]Soul Calibur 3 [holding key combo to change to 480p still working!] [*]Time Crisis: Crisis Zone [big improvement] Hmm, it must be interesting to see Namco fighters running 240p. It's not the native resolution so I wonder how those would translate to the downscale.

But I wanted to suggest a different route which works 10x better in the cases where it's possible: use the xbox version of the game. 98% of xbox games run 480p natively, and often have better graphics in addition. Even the very best deinterlacer (well, I've only tested the DVDO VP50, but it's a pretty nice box) can't touch true 480p. Admittedly, not ever ps2 game is available on xbox. But when they are, I can't think of a single case I'd prefer the ps2 version.

Both Vampire: Darstalker's Collection (JPN) and Street Fighter Zero Fighter's Generations (JPN) can be hexedited and patched to 240p, you need the OPL version with boot fix for those two to work and in the ingame display settings move the image and adjust sharpness to max. They are miles better in glorious scanlines! I can attach proof if you require it. Also, please add King of Fighters NESTS collection (JPN), the AES versions of KOF99, KOF2000 and KOF2001 can be hexedited and patched to 240p as each AES has a different ELF file, as confirmed in neo-arcadia.com forums, http://www.neo-arcadia.com/forum/viewto ... 0&start=25 For the NESTS KOFs, you can use PS2 Controller Remapper to change the fixed layout of A B C D to the NeoGeo one on a fight stick.

If that mode is what I think it is (480p30?), then that might explain why it's not displaying properly; that's a pretty atypical mode for a consumer device to be outputting.
